Steve's Rifle Cartridge Reloading

These are the techniques and equipment that I use to produce reloaded cartridges for bolt and semi-automatic rifles. Other techniques and equipment may be: better/worse, cheaper/costlier, safer/more dangerous or whatever. Read this stuff and use it or not, at your own risk!

Boxer v/s Berdan Primers

Cases with inserted primers are designed to accept EITHER Boxer OR Berdan style primers. Generally, Boxer primers are used in the US, while the rest of the world use(d) Berdan primers. Ironically, Berdan was a US Army Officer (remember the Berdan Sharpshooters?), while Boxer was a foreign national.

Cases using Berdan primers will have two (or more) off-center flash holes, as seen in the above photo, left and center. What may seem to be a center hole is just a dimple, it doesn't go thru. The right hand case is a US case designer for the Boxer primer. It has ONE central flash hole.

I hate to mention this, but the US did manufacture some Berdan primed Match ammo in 1924 or 25, and there is (was) some Berdan primed cases with one central hole. Either of these examples is very, very rare! Also, some feel that the Berdan design can offer somewhat betters accuracy due to better/more uniform powder ignition.
