The Mauser Bolt Handle

A Different Approach

Page 2

With a triangular file, begin filing the receiver at the scribe line. Ý Ý Ý

After the triangular file has made a nice start, use a round file to deepen the cut, at the same time angling the cut toward the centerline of the boltway. See how the filed depression is wider at the "top"?

With the handle back in the receiver, center punch the bolt handle as shown, the punch mark is just "this side" of the edge of the action, that is, if the action had not been filed away.

Make the center punch VERY DEEP!!

Here the bolt handle is in the $9 Chinese vise and the bolt knob is supported by a scrap (I used a steel scrap, but wood works just as well). I am drilling with a 1/8 or smaller drill bit.

Another photo. See that the hole is at an angle to the stem of the handle. The drill will try to walk down toward the bolt body. Use small drills and work up in small steps to 1/4-inch.
